We connect people who want to improve literacy with the resources needed to do it – grounded in the science of reading.

Turning the Page on the Reading Wars: Advancing Student Literacy

Thank you to everyone who joined us for last week’s event on advancing student literacy. A special thank you to our guest speakers Duchesne Drew, Emily Hanford, and Kareem Weaver. It was truly inspiring to see so many people come together to address the literacy gap – one of the most pressing and solvable issues we face today.

There was so much wisdom shared in the room that helped ground us in the history of what brought us here today and how to best move forward so that kids, teachers, and parents are getting what they need.

So what’s next? How do we truly turn the page on the reading wars?

One of our key takeaways was the call for unity – for shared understanding of the science of reading, why it is important, and how we can work together to make sure our children are learning to read, no matter what.

  • We need schools to find the right curriculum that is not only aligned to the science of reading, but also implementable.

  • We need parents and teachers working together in support of student success.

  • We need higher education to give our teachers proper tools and instruction that teaches kids to read in a way that works for all.

The Minnesota Literacy Coalition is a perfect example of unity and how multiple stakeholders are working together to address the needs listed above. Please join us!
